And from what I can tell, either your mio likes the new motherboard, or it doesnt. the area where you will run into problems is with the mio. Plugging everything in as a direct motherboard replacement should work as expected.

Either the z series like the Z97 or a Rampage for the Aurora.
#ALIENWARE AURORA R4 SERVICE MANUAL UPGRADE#
I have seen almost everyone doing this upgrade using a ASUS brand mobo. The Mio tends to be the bigger issue, as if it decides not to work, you will have no lights, and no vents. The only issues with upgrading would be dealing with the OEM PSU and the MIO. I can provide you with a couple references regarding a upgrade to a motherboard. Lets try and get this done because it would be a huge help to a lot of us and I'm pretty sure it would also be very appreciated.
#ALIENWARE AURORA R4 SERVICE MANUAL MODS#
There are plenty of Aurora owners on here and I'm sure someone has upgraded to an after market board as well as mods who may know of some members who have done this. If any of you know of anyone who has done this please ask if they could post a tutorial listing what type of mobo they bought, and how they hooked up the MIO board to get the venting and lighing to work. If any of you have personally swapped out your motherboard for an after market board please share with us and post a tutorial.
#ALIENWARE AURORA R4 SERVICE MANUAL HOW TO#
We, at least I, really want there to be an official thread, tutorial, how to on this subject to help people make their Aurora's their very own. Literally every single other component on an Aurora is upgradeable according to Alienware except the motherboard. I also believe that we should encourage this upgrade and show Alienware that we want this and that it should be an "approved upgrade" and that their team work with Asus, AsRock, EVGA, MSI, etc. Listing everything from what type of Aurora you have to what motherboard you bought to how you connected the MIO board and the rest of the cables and connectors and so on. I think it would be in the best interest of all Aurora owners if there were a true "Tutorial" for a motherboard swap. There also doesn't happen to be a true tutorial but more so just a group of guys asking questions. However it is very difficult to follow the posts and there were PM's exchanged to help troubleshoot that the normal reader is not privy to. This thread " " shows that you can swap your motherboard out and still get everything to work. I have asked the Alienware staff repeatedly for an official how to and they refused because according to them a motherboard upgrade to a 3rd party is and I quote "not an approved upgrade." So they won't help us. can be ultra difficult with time consuming troubleshooting.

So as most of you know swapping out your Aurora motherboard for a 3rd party one like an Asus, MSI, AsRock, etc.
